Rethink Your Drink

This month Healthy Weights Connection London Site Coordinator, Alyssa, worked with several program coordinators who work with children from N’Amerind to implement “Rethink Your Drink” - a workshop provided by Nikki George from Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre and funded through the Healthy Kids Community Challenge. Nikki discussed the issues with consuming too much sugar. She was able to provide the participants, parents and their children, with hands on displays and activities. One of the activities that Nikki had families participate in gave examples of popular drink choices and then showed a visual of how much added white sugar contained in these drink choices – This was a very eye opening experience. We also learned how much sugar to limit children to on a weekly basis and were given tips on how to reduce the amount of sugar in our drinks. The families received take home items including a recipe for a no-sugar-added slushie, a water bottle and an infographic explaining the importance of water, a resource from Southern Ontario Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative. The participants seemed really engaged and drank up the information along with the water from the infusion station. It’s safe to say that the families who attended this workshop will start school this year thinking about their drink choices.
