We have been fighting the winter blue’s with FREE activities for families.

This year, Healthy Weights Connection (HWC), in partnership with the Georgian Bay Métis Council (GBMC) and the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO), set out to find funds to purchase a number of snowshoes for children and were able to do so through Bruce Power’s Aboriginal Community Investment Fund. The MNO already houses multiple adult-sized snowshoes, so we decided to increase the library and allow families to get out and be active together!

Since January rolled around, we have lent snowshoes to the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Simcoe, the Orillia Native Women’s Group, the Georgian Bay Native Friendship Centre, and to multiple families! We also took all of Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School out to learn to snowshoe. We saw 196 children that day; the kids played games, ran races in their snowshoes and had healthy muffins and a healthy hot chocolate. By the end of the day, they all agreed that snowshoeing is a really fun activity when the snow arrives and they welcomed us back next snow fall.

If your family or your organization is at all interested in using this resource when the snow returns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
