Cultural Cooking: A working partnership between the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Simcoe, Healthy Weights Connection and The Métis Nation of Ontario.

Recently, the implementation of an 8 session, cultural cooking class was put together and the Métis Nation of Ontario was there to lead the Aboriginal portion which educated the kids on traditional foods and utilized them in fun, modern recipes like Bannock pizza, Elk burgers, Strawberry jam, Wild rice pudding, and berries and maple syrup.

On average, 10-13 participants attended each session, with only one injury resulting in stitches, but that is all a part of learning kitchen prep skills and safe-handling of kitchen tools.

The classes were such a success for both the club and the Métis Nation of Ontario that the invitation to teach about traditional foods and local Aboriginal culture will stand for next year.

Thank you to the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Simcoe, Tera Lynn Moreau Vivian, Community Wellness Coordinator, and Lisa Talbot, Métis Healthy Babies, Healthy Children Coordinator at the Métis Nation of Ontario for being all inclusive and sharing their work with one another.
